Joining our team in early November

Mattie Hyland, PsyD

I believe that every child wants to do well and that when children are struggling, it is often because they need the right support, tools for success, consequences that make sense, and healthy accountability. My goal is to help children and families understand what is driving challenging behaviors while translating psychological science into practical strategies that actually work in everyday life.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents. I work with children experiencing Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), emotional dysregulation, behavioral challenges, and difficulties at home or school. I also provide parent coaching for families navigating tantrums, aggression, defiance, and other disruptive behaviors. I believe in empowering parents to uphold firm boundaries and step into parental authority using strategies that are developmentally appropriate for their child and strengthen family relationships. My approach aims at increasing respect and cooperation over achieving immediate compliance, with strategies designed to support long-term success rather than short-term fixes.

I draw from evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness for ADHD, Parent Management Training (PMT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, and a variety of other modalities. Treatment is individualized to reflect each family’s goals and values while partnering closely with parents, who are often the most powerful agents of change in a child’s life. Therapy focuses not only on reducing symptoms but also on building resilience, confidence, emotional regulation, and stronger family relationships.

I earned my doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Eastern Kentucky University with specialized training in neurodivergence and adolescent psychology. I then completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Royalton Psychological Associates where I received specialized training in early childhood and child psychology. I remain committed to ongoing education to ensure my patients receive the highest standard of care.

I know what it is like to be a child who struggled, and I know what it is like to have parents who loved and supported me deeply but did not always know how to help. Those experiences shaped the psychologist I am today. My goal is to meet children where they are while helping parents move from feeling like they are simply trying their best to feeling confident that they know how to support their child in ways that truly help. Every brain works differently. My job is to help you and your child understand how their brain works so you can stop fighting against it and start working with it.

What to Expect

Finding the right therapist for your child is an important first step, and I want families to feel confident that they are receiving the care that best fits their needs. Before scheduling, I offer a brief phone consultation or email exchange to discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether I am the best fit for your family’s needs. If I believe another provider would better serve your child, I will gladly offer recommendations whenever possible.

Following our consultation, we will schedule a 60-minute intake appointment. I ask that your child and at least one parent or legal guardian attend this first session. During the intake, I take time to develop a comprehensive understanding of your child’s strengths, challenges, developmental history, family relationships, school functioning, and the broader context in which they are growing.

At the following appointment, we will review my clinical impressions, discuss initial diagnostic impressions, and collaborate together to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique needs and your family’s goals.

Treatment is typically structured around weekly 60-minute individual therapy sessions with your child, combined with parent sessions on a monthly or bi-weekly basis. Parent involvement is an essential component of treatment for most cases. These meetings allow us to review your child’s progress, address concerns, refine parenting strategies, and ensure that the skills your child is learning in therapy are effectively supported at home. This collaborative approach often leads to more impactful and lasting change.

Prior to your first appointment, all intake paperwork and required forms must be completed through the secure client portal. Because these documents provide essential information needed to prepare for your child’s care, incomplete paperwork may result in the intake appointment being rescheduled.

Important Note: Diagnostic services occur only in the context of ongoing treatment. I do not provide stand-alone diagnostic assessments. When diagnoses are given, I will provide documentation which can be taken to schools, pediatricians, psychiatrists, or other providers as needed. A multidisciplinary approach, communicating with other professionals in your child’s community is a standard part of ongoing care.
